SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - Officials in Southern California’s Orange County have reversed a plan to build emergency homeless shelters in three cities following large protests.
Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to rescind their March 19 approval of putting tent shelters in Irvine, Huntington Beach and Laguna Niguel to house up to 400 people.
The Orange County Register says demonstrators rallied outside, chanting: “No tent city!”
The newspaper says despite the reversal, it’s likely supervisors will vote again for a plan to construct a shelter in at least one Orange County city.
That’s because Tuesday’s action leaves the county without a plan to implement a judge’s request to find appropriate shelter for a few hundred homeless people - many of whom were moved last month from a dismantled encampment along the Santa Ana River.
