DETROIT (AP) - A task force has been created to prevent lead poisoning from paint in Detroit homes with children.
The Detroit health department says Tuesday that a pilot program will target areas where data shows the highest prevalence of elevated blood lead levels in children.
That program starts this summer and includes identifying homes where there are children and pregnant women. The program also will identify other potential lead hazards.
Future rental code ordinance enforcement also will be aligned with ZIP codes where the prevalence of elevated blood lead levels in children is high.
Lead poisoning has been linked to brain development problems.
