LONE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Authorities in north Arkansas say a sheriff’s deputy investigating a report of a stolen tractor fatally shot a Texas man who confronted him with a crossbow.
Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery said Tuesday that Deputy Craig Gates shot 50-year-old Michael Lavelle Holliman - who said he was from Nacogdoches, Texas, when he was arrested in January for driving while intoxicated in Mountain Home.
Montgomery said Gates had responded to a call at a store in Lone Rock, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of Little Rock, when he saw a tractor that had been stolen earlier in the day.
Montgomery says Gates stopped the tractor, and Holliman confronted him with a crossbow before Gates opened fire.
Arkansas State Police agents are investigating.
Gates suffered minor injuries and is on leave.
