CASTLETON, Vt. (AP) - Castleton University in Vermont will be shutting down its polling institute amid a large operating loss for the school.

Institute Director Rich Clark confirmed Wednesday that it would be shutting down, telling WCAX-TV that the closure is part of a restructuring at the university.

The school announced in February that it would be reducing its staff through layoffs, elimination of positions and early retirements as part of an effort to close a $1.5 million operating loss for the current year.

Enrollment at the school now stands at around 1,800 full-time undergraduates. Officials say changes are needed to retain affordability for students.
