“Top Gun” fans will soon see what became of “Iceman” after waiting for more than three decades.

Early reports by The Wrap that Val Kilmer will reprise his iconic role in “Top Gun: Maverick” were confirmed Wednesday by The Hollywood Reporter. A representative for Paramount had initially declined to comment.

Mr. Kilmer apologized in 2017 on Facebook for an earlier post in which he spoke of the role before officially signing a contract.

“This is a long way off so calm down,” he wrote in November. “This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role. I jumped the gun with my post. I jumped the topgun … An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent.”

Filming for the project, which will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, began on May 31.

Mr. Cruise highlighted the moment by tweeting an image of himself in character with the text: “Feel the need.”

“Top Gun: Maverick” is scheduled for release on July 12, 2019.
