HAMPTON, Va. (AP) - College students will get a chance this week to learn about one type of condition on Mars during a simulation at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton.

The facility is hosting 10 university teams Thursday for an exercise on extracting water from simulated Martian subsurface ice. The event comes as NASA explores how to develop a sustainable environment for humans on the planet.

Each ice station will consist of layers of material and solid blocks of ice that students will drill into using equipment they designed and built.

Virginia Tech is among the participating colleges. The event is in its second year.
