BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Officials in Burlington, Vermont have compromised with local residents to keep many of the trees that were scheduled to be removed from a heavily wooded park.
WPTZ-TV reports Burlington City Council agreed to preserve the trees Monday night as part of a finalized plan to redevelop City Hall Park.
City arborist V.J. Comai says there are 51 trees in the park. Plans call for removing up to 21 of the existing trees and then planting 18 new trees.
The original plan called for about half of the trees to be removed.
Keep the Park Green member Monique Fordham says while the group wanted to save more trees, the agreement is the best they could get under the circumstances.
Construction on the park is scheduled to begin in 2019.
