TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a Goodyear man who fatally stabbed his wife and adult son in 2013 and was sentenced to 25 years in prison has died in an apparent suicide.
Arizona Department of Corrections officials say 69-year-old Eugene Maraventano was found hanging in his cell Wednesday at the state prison in Tucson.
Maraventano pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and was sent to prison in December 2016.
Authorities say Maraventano killed his 63-year-old-wife and 27-year-old son with a 14-inch knife.
Maraventano told police investigators that he feared he gave his wife HIV through prostitutes he used to frequent and was worried about what his jobless son would make of his life.
A court twice determined Maraventano wasn’t competent to stand trial before he entered a plea agreement.
