PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Providence City Council and Mayor Jorge Elorza have reached a tentative deal on the city budget after councilors voted not to the pass the spending and revenue plan last week.
The council decided at last week’s special meeting to send the proposed $749-million spending plan back to committee for further deliberation. The Providence Journal reports the decision followed after the Democratic mayoral administration tried to take funding from the Neighborhood Infrastructure Fund to pay for a past school-improvement project.
According to the tentative agreement Monday, the city will finance its obligation through other funding sources. The remainder of the Neighborhood Infrastructure Fund will be earmarked for various projects around the city before the end of the fiscal year.
The matter will be discussed at a committee meeting on Wednesday.
