OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - A north Mississippi college town may grant incentives to developers who build low-cost housing.
The Oxford Eagle reports that city officials are considering the waiving city fees and possibly aiding stormwater and utility needs for such developments.
The first development that could benefit from the plan consists of 48 three-bedroom townhouses.
Architect Ross Barkley says the development will provide housing for “professionals and individuals of all types and ages.”
Spurred by growing enrollment at the University of Mississippi and Oxford’s popularity as a football getaway and retirement community, the city is experiencing a noticeable housing crunch.
Developers say the townhouses will be partially funded with low-income housing tax credits, which require at least some units to be restricted to people earning below-average incomes.
Oxford aldermen could approve plans in July.
