SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - South Burlington School District officials are looking for ways to manage noise from overhead fighter jets including soundproofing some buildings.
WCAX-TV reports the district hired a firm to test noise levels at Chamberlin Middle School to evaluate the impact of F-16 jets travelling from Burlington International Airport. According to the study, noise levels in the school satisfied state Occupational Safety and Health recommendations but exceeded guidelines outlined by the Federal Interagency Committee on Noise or FICON.
Superintendent David Young says FICON qualifications are better suited for schools. Young says noise from jets could affect lessons.
More tests will be done in August to determine if the school qualifies for federally-funded soundproofing.
Burlington officials recently approved housing F-35s at the Burlington International Airport, despite opposition from some residents to the noise.
