BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont city of Burlington has reopened two beaches, a day after they were closed due to high levels of E. coli bacteria in sections of Lake Champlain.
Blodgett and Blanchard beaches were closed Wednesday afternoon. WCAX-TV reports that the beaches reopened on Thursday.
The city’s Department of Public Works said the high levels of E. coli bacteria were likely caused by the discharge of about 145,000 gallons of stormwater and wastewater that went into the lake following a large rain storm swept across Vermont Monday evening. Further testing will determine whether the discharge was the reason behind the levels.
Storm-related overflows on June 21 and May 31 also led to beach closures in the city.
