SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - The head of Spokane’s City Council says the Greyhound bus company might be violating the city’s anti-discrimination laws by permitting federal border agents on its buses to check citizenship status.

Ben Stuckart made the comments in a letter to Greyhound.

The Spokesman-Review says Greyhound has acknowledged receiving the letter. The company said Tuesday it is bound by federal law to allow the searches.

Stuckart contends the city’s civil rights code promising “equal participation . in public accommodations” is rendered impossible by Greyhound’s allowance for Customs and Border Patrol agents to question passengers as buses are parked at the city-owned station in downtown Spokane.

Greyhound says federal law permits warrantless searches within 100 miles of a U.S. border. Spokane lies just inside that boundary.
