SANDY, Utah (AP) - Salt Lake County officials are moving forward with a $58 million sales tax for transportation after receiving support from Sandy and Draper city councils.
The Deseret News reports the tax hike will raise taxes by roughly one cent for every $4 spent to pay for transit and road upgrades in the county that have gone unfunded for years.
Salt Lake County Councilwoman Aimee Winder says the Utah State Tax Commission will begin collecting tax revenue tax on Oct. 1.
Sandy Mayor Kurt Bradburn’s administration plans to push back against the tax and is looking into his ability to veto the council’s Tuesday resolution.
The tax hike was narrowly rejected by voters in 2015.
A transportation bill recently passed by the Utah Legislature gave counties the authority to resurrect the tax.
