MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina bridge that closed when inspectors found a snapped support cable has reopened.
Local news sources report the James B. Edwards Bridge over the Wando River on Interstate 526 reopened to traffic Saturday, more than a week ahead of the targeted reopening date.
Officials closed the westbound lanes of I-526 last month after the snapped cable was discovered. The cable helps hold concrete blocks together.
State and local officials were among the first to cross the bridge. South Carolina Transportation Secretary Christy Hall said the bridge is “absolutely safe,” adding that she had no concerns about the bridge.
Hall said once permanent repairs on the cables are complete, crews will apply sealant to the bridge’s entire road surface, which will lead to lane closures.
