GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - Two Mississippi Delta school districts are beginning to work on plans to complete their state-mandated consolidation.
Interim state Deputy Superintendent Mike Kent met last week with superintendents from the Greenwood and Leflore County districts, as well as the Greenwood school board.
The Greenwood Commonwealth reports that Kent is telling leaders that they should focus efforts around students.
He says an adviser will help assess the finances of both districts and oversee consolidation-related spending.
Voters will choose two new board members for the consolidated district in November. After they’re sworn in Jan. 1, the new board can discuss a superintendent and other issues.
Both Greenwood Superintendent Jennifer Wilson and Leflore County interim Superintendent James Johnson-Waldington can apply for the new superintendent’s position.
The merger takes place July 1, 2019.
