ERIE, Pa. (AP) - A jury has convicted a northwestern Pennsylvania police officer of vehicular homicide while driving under the influence in a fatal off-duty crash last year.
Jurors deliberated for about two hours Monday before convicting 47-year-old Erie officer Cheryl Frey of that charge as well as aggravated assault by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter.
Investigators say Frey’s blood-alcohol content was nearly three times the legal limit when she crossed into oncoming traffic in February 2017 and hit another vehicle, killing 57-year-old Wade Schulze.
Frey’s lawyer acknowledged that she was intoxicated but said a third vehicle involved in the crash caused the victim’s death.
Frey, who had agreed to but later rejected a plea bargain, will be sentenced Aug. 1. She has been suspended without pay from the police force.
