We are hearing a cacophony of left-leaning commentators and Democrats making outlandish predictions regarding President Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court (“Trump says he probably won’t question Supreme Court candidates on abortion,” Web, July 1). For example, Sen. Kristen Gillibrand of New York said women will be arrested for having an abortion if the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision decriminalizing abortion is overturned.

If Roe v. Wade is overturned, the decision about whether abortion will be criminalized will be left to the states. New York is one of the most unlikely to criminalize abortion. Even if it did, it is extremely unlikely that women would be prosecuted. “There is no documented case since 1922 in which a woman has been charged in an abortion in the United States,” according to Clarke D. Forsythe, senior counsel with Americans United for Life.

Democrats paint abortion as great for women. On the contrary, abortion raises the risk of breast cancer, premature births in subsequent pregnancies (which can result in harm to the baby, including epilepsy and cerebral palsy; the March of Dimes provides a long list of pathologies on its website) and many physiological problems, including depression and suicide.

Of course, Democrats and abortion providers don’t want women to know about the risks of abortion. They want to scare them into thinking if abortion is eliminated they will be deprived of a great good.
