DELAWARE CITY, Del. (AP) - A plastics manufacturing facility in northern Delaware with a long history of environmental violations is being closed down.

Officials with Formosa Plastics Corp. say operations at its site in Delaware City will cease by September, with site decommissioning expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The company says production of polyvinyl chloride resin will shift to a newer and more cost-efficient plant in Point Comfort, Texas.

Officials say the Delaware plant closing will affect about 100 employees.

Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, is made with vinyl chloride, a known carcinogen. Production of PVC began at the Delaware site in 1966 by Stauffer Chemical, which sold the facility to Formosa in 1981.

The property was declared a Superfund site by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1983.
