HARTFORD, Vt. (AP) - Vermont transportation officials plan to install a temporary fence on the Quechee Gorge Bridge to prevent suicides.
Vermont Agency of Transportation officials Tuesday in Hartford a 9-foot-tall chain link fence would be built on both sides of the bridge. The fence will include viewing cutouts for visitors.
Critics of the fence say it’s not aesthetically pleasing and detracts from the view at the bridge.
VTrans project manager JB McCarthy says officials considered multiple options, but that safety at the bridge is a priority.
According to a 2017 legislative report, there have been 15 suicides at the bridge since 2003.
Officials plan to erect the fence before mid-September.
