NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island school superintendent accused of misusing district funds has resigned.

North Providence’s School Committee accepted Superintendent Bridget Morisseau’s resignation Wednesday night. They also voted to commission an audit of Morisseau’s expenses.

Committee chairman Anthony Marciano says former district finance director John McNamee alerted him about issues involving credit card use on July 7.

According to Mayor Charles Lombardi, Morisseau may have spent as much as $12,000 in district funds on “questionable” expenses.

Morisseau was tapped for North Providence’s superintendent role after serving as an assistant superintendent in Smithfield. The committee has appointed Robert O’Brien to serve as interim superintendent.

Morisseau couldn’t be reached for comment.
