KEANSBURG, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey police officer helped a woman escape her smoke-filled apartment after a fire broke out in another unit.

The woman lives in a two-story Keansburg home that had been converted into two apartments. Police went there around 5:35 a.m. Wednesday after a fire started in a bathroom exhaust fan on the lower floor.

A man who lives in that unit stopped the blaze with a fire extinguisher. But it spread heavy smoke throughout the home.

Patrolman Frank Wood ran up the back stairs and banged on the door of the upstairs apartment. He heard the woman calling for help, but she couldn’t find the door due to the thick smoke.

Wood tried unsuccessfully to kick down the door, but then guided her as she crawled to the door. Wood and another officer got her out of the home.
