LAS VEGAS (AP) - Officials in Las Vegas are urging homeless people to use cooling centers and daytime shelters after three individuals were found dead in as many days of suspected heat-related causes.
The city in a statement Friday said the three people believed to be homeless were found dead just west of downtown, near Interstate 15.
The city’s effort comes as the first significant heat wave of the summer will push temperatures past 110 degrees (43 Celsius) next week, reaching 116 degrees (47 Celsius) in some areas.
The National Weather Service in Las Vegas has issued an excessive heat warning for Tuesday through Thursday. Meteorologist John Adair says the heat wave will likely extend into next weekend.
Councilman Cedric Crear says the deaths are heartbreaking.
The city plans to open a resource center for homeless people by the end of the month.
