RICHFORD, Vt. (AP) - Vermont officials say a chemical found to cause cancer has been detected in elevated levels in a Franklin County town’s water supply.
Richford town officials released a public notice Thursday telling residents that tests found elevated levels of haloacetic acids at the end of June. WCAX-TV reports the acids are a byproduct of chlorination disinfection and can cause an increase in the risk of cancer if consumed over a long period.
Officials say it’s not an emergency and residents do not need to boil their water.
State officials have planned a public meeting on the issue for Aug. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Richford town hall.
