BETHEL, Alaska (AP) - The Kuskokwim River Salmon Management Working Group is recommending for a small western Alaska town to receive additional fishing hours this season after the community’s subsistence fishing ability was reduced.

KYUK-AM reports the lower Kuskokwim River opened for gillnet fishing for six hours Friday, but recent deaths in Kasigluk, a town of about 650 people, limited the community’s ability to go out in fish.

The working group made the recommendation to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service last week. Kasigluk is located in the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge.

Refuge manager Ken Stahlnecker says he will consider the recommendation when he meets with the Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission this week.

The 6-hour gillnet opening last week was designed to support those who could not fish during the earlier openings.
