BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Temperatures in Burlington, Vermont, and Portland, Maine, have hit record lows as a deep freeze continued on the East Coast.

Burlington, Vermont, recorded a record for the date of -20 F (-28 celsuis) on Sunday morning, beating the old record of -19 F (-28 celsius) set in 1923.

Portland, Maine, recorded a nippy -11 F (-23 celsius) Sunday morning, a degree below the previous record for date set in 1941.



The National Weather Service says temperatures of -31 F (-35 celsius) were recorded in East Berkshire and North Underhill, Vermont, and -30 F (-34 celsuis) in Whitefield, New Hampshire.

Forecasters say the bitter cold is expected to lessen in the coming week.
