SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Public works crews are putting in extra hours in Savannah this weekend to monitor for burst water lines after a week of icy weather.
John Sawyer is Savannah’s public works director. He said Friday that calls reporting broken water lines and leaks had jumped to 55 since Wednesday’s winter storm. He says Savannah typically gets one or two such calls each day.
Sawyer said pipe problems often aren’t detected until after things thaw out after a freeze. The Savannah Morning News reports city officials are advising residents to let their faucets drip if leaks occur and wait for city crews to arrive.
The National Weather Service says Savannah got 1.2 inches (3 centimeters) of snow Wednesday. Thawing has been slow, with overnight temperatures forecast to remain below freezing through Saturday.
