SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Utah Department of Health says the flu has become widespread in the state, and the number of cases is expected to continue rising.

The Deseret News reports the state health department has recorded that more than 400 residents have been hospitalized due to the illness this season. The majority of cases have been from adults ages 65 and above.

According to the department, the highest number of cases has been in the Salt Lake City area.

Department epidemiologist Gregg Reed says the flu can be more severe for the elderly, children and people with weakened immune systems.

Reed says people should still get a vaccine as it helps not just the individual avoid the flu, but it also helps reduce the spread of the disease in an area.
