BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - The late President Millard Fillmore’s annual birthday party is still on, but it will be cut short by cold.
The University at Buffalo holds a graveside service for the 13th U.S. president - and the university’s first chancellor - each January. But with single-digit temperatures in the forecast, this year’s program on Friday will be shortened to an outdoor wreath presentation. The rest will be moved inside.
Representatives from the White House, Fillmore legacy organizations and Forest Lawn Cemetery are expected to attend.
The University at Buffalo has been marking Fillmore’s birthday since 1937. This year’s event will feature a talk on how the Fugitive Slave Act signed by Fillmore in 1850 affected fugitives in New York. The act allowed for the capture and return of runaway slaves.
