STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) - Police have identified the woman who was struck by a car and killed while on her way to work.

The Stamford Advocate reports 58-year-old Lynette Wagner died Tuesday after she was hit in Stamford.

Sgt. Andrew Gallagher says Wagner was crossing the street around 7 a.m. in front of Henkel headquarters when she was hit.

Gallagher says the 38-year-old driver told investigators he only hit a briefcase Wagner was wheeling with her. However, the police sergeant says witness statements and other evidence is pointing to a different series of events.

Wagner’s death marked the city’s first pedestrian death of the year. Police say six people died in five vehicle accidents in 2017.

Gallagher says the investigation is ongoing.
