VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - A park overlooking the Mississippi River will be closed through early spring as Mississippi officials determine a plan to clean up oil contamination.

The Vicksburg Post reports the Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen on Thursday approved a 60-day contract extension with Central Asphalt Co. of Vicksburg because of the contamination at Riverfront Park. It was discovered Jan. 4 when a track hoe scooped-up oil while Central Asphalt employees worked nearby.

Officials had closed the park for 90 days in December so the contractor could work to strengthen a bluff and resurface play areas threatened by a section of the bluff that’s been sliding off.

Lynn Chambers with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality said Friday that officials need to determine the oil’s source and extent of contamination.
