LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - A conservation group has acquired more than 50 acres (20 hectares) of natural habitat along or near Indiana’s official state river, the Wabash River.
The NICHES Land Trust says it recently acquired the two plots, which cover about 27 acres (11 hectares) each within northwestern Indiana’s Tippecanoe and Warren counties.
NICHES executive director Gus Nyber says the Lafayette-based nonprofit has been slowly working to link all of the natural properties in the area “to create a continuous corridor for wildlife and recreation.”
The Journal & Courier reports that the group’s two newest properties are the Ada Beineke Memorial Forest and the Laura Hare Bend of the Wabash tract.
Both plots of land were acquired from ArborAmerica Inc., a company that cultivates and sells hardwood trees.
