ELON, N.C. (AP) - The outgoing president of a North Carolina university is leaving the class of 2018 something else to remember him by.
Elon University President Leo Lambert, who will step down on March 1, will deliver the commencement address on May 19. The school announced the speech on Friday.
A statement from the school said senior class officers suggested Lambert to his successor, Connie Book.
Lambert announced last February 2017 he was stepping down as Elon’s eighth president. Considered one of the most influential figures in the history of the university, Lambert has served as Elon’s president since January 1999. During that time, he oversaw the transition from college to university.
Following a sabbatical year dedicated to writing a new book, Lambert will serve as president emeritus and professor.
