MILLSBORO, Del. (AP) - An executive with the poultry processing company in Delaware that’s been cited for spraying wastewater with excessive nitrate levels onto nearby fields says Mountaire Farms is willing to pay for drilling deep wells for concerned property owners.
Local media report Mountaire executive Michael Tirrell addressed a public meeting Wednesday in Millsboro, the first held by company and state officials since the problems were uncovered.
The company says issues with its wastewater treatment system meant water that wasn’t properly cleaned was sprayed on fields. Some residents are concerned about groundwater contamination after state environmental regulators found elevated nitrate levels in some nearby private wells.
Tirrell says the company doesn’t think the wastewater treatment problems are to blame but the company wants to be “good neighbors” and will pay for the drilling.
He also says the company fired the employees overseeing the wastewater process.
