RIDGEFIELD, N.J. (AP) - Rescue workers in New Jersey saved a deer from icy doom after it became stranded in a frigid creek when the ice broke.
Ridgefield Fire Chief Michael Kees says the deer wandered out onto the iced-over Overpeck Creek Wednesday afternoon when a patch of ice gave way, causing the animal to fall into the water. The Record reports rescue teams from surrounding communities quickly responded and sent out boats to rescue the deer.
Officials harnessed the deer and led it back to shore, where they had blankets waiting to warm the animal up.
Kees says the deer stayed in the blankets for about a half-hour before walking off, saying “there was a big cheer from everybody.”
Kees says it was one of the department’s first successful deer rescues.
