BOSTON (AP) - A key legislative committee that oversees transportation in Massachusetts has new leadership in the Senate.
Winthrop Democrat Joseph Boncore (Bon-COR’-ee) was named Thursday as Senate chair of the Joint Committee on Transportation. Acting Senate President Harriette Chandler also appointed Sen. Eric Lesser, a Springfield Democrat, as vice chair of the committee.
Boncore succeeds Thomas McGee, a Democrat who served as Senate chair of the transportation panel until being elected mayor of Lynn in November.
The 35-year-old Boncore won a special election to the Senate in 2016.
Lesser has been a strong advocate for the expansion of high-speed rail service to western Massachusetts.
