OLD BRIDGE, N.J. (AP) - A 53-year tradition of cars flying from zero to 200 mph at a New Jersey raceway has reached its end.
Officials at Old Bridge Raceway Park tell NJ.com that the park will no longer host drag racing on weekends and Wednesday nights.
Steve Mamakas, of the Old Bridge Township Mayor’s Office of Economic Development, said Wednesday that the cost of fuel, tires and insurance among other expenses has become too much for the mostly amateur drivers.
Mamakas says the family that operates the raceway plan to convert the drag racing area into an outdoor concert venue. He says the raceway is “transforming to meet the future.”
Mamakas says the complex will still host other racing and motorsports events including drifting, cart racing and exotic car drives.
