OPINION:
At a time when the two Koreas are seeking to defuse tension through talks, Beijing’s unilateral launch last week of controversial aviation routes constituted a provocation undermining regional security. On Jan. 4, China launched the northbound M503 flight route along with three east-west extension routes — without prior negotiations with Taiwan. We solemnly protest this reckless behavior, which raises concerns over cross-Strait stability and regional aviation safety.
Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen immediately tweeted her strong response and pledged that Taiwan will continue to “safeguard the status quo.” She called on “all parties to do the same.”
China initiated these flight routes without consulting Taiwan. It is a move that violates the agreement reached by the two sides in March 2015 and intentionally dissembles improper political and even military agenda under the guise of civil aviation. The United States also voiced its opposition to these unilateral actions to alter the cross-Strait status quo.
We urge Beijing to immediately stop related flight operations on the controversial routes and promptly coordinate with relevant authorities in Taipei to initiate communication that will ensure civil aviation safety and regional security.
