SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - Police say a Louisiana man is dead after he was struck by a vehicle while trying to help motorists in an unrelated highway crash.

The Shreveport Times reports 74-year-old Ray Franklin Patton of Shreveport was killed Sunday on Interstate 20. Police say Patton had witnessed a crash between a tractor-trailer and a pickup truck and was trying to assist the victims.

Shreveport police said Patton pulled over and stopped his vehicle, then tried to cross both eastbound lanes of I-20 to get to the crash. He was fatally struck by an oncoming vehicle as he crossed the roadway.

Police said two people in the preceding crash were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
