Jim Himes unsure whether Hope Hicks will use broad executive privilege in testimony Tuesday

Rep. Jim Himes said Tuesday he’d like to see Hope Hicks’ testimony lead to a substantive conversation about what happened during the presidential campaign and transition relating to Russia.

“The assertion of executive privilege that we saw from Steve Bannon, I think was as broad an assertion of executive privilege as anyone in this town has ever seen, and obviously Congress has an interest in making sure that executive privilege is exactly what it is designed to be, which is a protection for the president’s advisers when they are advising the president,” Mr. Himes, Connecticut Democrat, said on CNN.

Ms. Hicks is set to testify before the House Intelligence Committee later on Tuesday.

Mr. Bannon, former White House chief strategist, also testified before the committee earlier this year. He said the administration prevented him from answering many of their questions due to executive privilege, but lawmakers said his interpretation of that ability was far more broad than was allowed.

Members of the administration and the campaign have met with the committee as part of their investigation into what happened in the 2016 election relating to claims of collusion with Russia and Russian interference.
