GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Eight South Carolina legislators have filed a bill calling for the sale of a hospital system, a move that officials with the medical center described as a political attack.
The legislators tell the Greenville News that the sale of Greenville Health System would generate an estimated $2 billion to $3 billion. They say that money would be shared with various governmental, educational and other types of groups.
The legislators opposed GHS’s change from a public nonprofit to a private, nonprofit multi-regional health system in 2015 because it ended government oversight of public assets.
GHS spokeswoman Sandy Dees said the sale is not in the best interest of the community.
And a key Senate leader said he believes the sale could be “a tremendous step backward.”
