OPINION:
For the first 30 years of my life, I was a proud registered Democrat, following in the footsteps of my mother and my father, a steel worker and card-carrying union member. Our family was very conservative and traditional, as were most of the people in our small, heavily Republican town in southeastern Pennsylvania.
Fast forward almost 40 years and I find myself a dedicated member of the Republican Party, having left the Democrats in 1980. My father would be appalled at the state of the party he was born into and supported for the 72 years he was alive. I’m sure he would not recognize the party of FDR and JFK, and would be baffled by the performance, platform and attitudes of its leadership and members. Specifically, he would not understand the hateful demeanor and disrespect displayed by the Democrats at the recent State of the Union given by President Trump. The outrage demonstrated by decent, America-loving citizens against such a display is rapidly growing on both sides of the aisle and the political spectrum. If the Democrats insist on pursuing a strategy of resistance, obstruction and hate, I predict dire consequences in their favorability ratings as America heads toward the 2018 elections and beyond.
May God help them out of the dark wilderness to which they have consigned themselves.
