WEST WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island police officer is being credited with saving nearly a dozen people from a burning house after he discovered the early morning fire on routine patrol.
Authorities say West Warwick rookie officer Brian Goetz spotted the blaze at the multifamily home shortly before 2:30 a.m. Saturday. He notified dispatch and ran into the home to help get the 11 residents out.
Two residents were seriously injured and are in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.
Firefighters were ordered out of the building at one point as the flames became too intense.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The American Red Cross is helping several residents with housing and other needs.
