BELCOURT, N.D. (AP) - The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa is getting a $15 million grant from the federal Transportation Department for a major road project.

North Dakota’s congressional delegation says the money will pay to rebuild about 9 miles of the Jack Rabbit Road, which runs through the heart of the northern North Dakota reservation.

The narrow two-lane road was built in the mid-1970s and wasn’t designed for modern traffic. It’s been the site of numerous accidents. Tribal Chairman Jamie Azure recently told The Associated Press that rebuilding the road is one of the tribe’s greatest needs.

The project is being done in four phases. The federal government provided $6 million in March for the first phase of reconstruction of the 14-mile road.
