WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - Rival ferry companies in Rhode Island are squaring off over a proposal for a high-speed ship to bring more passengers to Block Island.
Interstate Navigation made the case for expanding its service by adding a $10.5 million vessel that will double the number of passengers it can carry from 250 to 500 during a Thursday meeting with the state Division of Public Utilities and Carriers in Warwick.
The Providence Journal reports that Rhode Island Fast Ferry countered the proposal, arguing that the service is meant to undercut Fast Ferry’s planned high-speed service from North Kingstown.
Currently, Rhode Island Fast Ferry is tied up in court over construction of a dock on Block Island for its service.
Interstate Navigation is requesting a decision by Dec. 31.
