NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - A Massachusetts developer has purchased a former school property in Newport, Rhode Island.

Downeaster Alexa Holdings, LLC, whose principals are attorney David Megna and his son, purchased the two former Cluny School buildings and the surrounding 4.63 acres from the Diocese of Providence for more than $1 million.

The Newport Daily News reports that Megna hopes to keep the building as a school.

Megna says he intended to redevelop the property for residential use, but now says the “highest and best use of that property is definitely a school.”

New port Public Schools Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain says she has met with Megna about the property, and says she also hopes the property could help house School Department administration.

The independent Catholic elementary school closed last year.
