ASBURY PARK, N.J. (AP) - An 82-year-old driver who allegedly struck and killed a pedestrian in a hit-and-run accident has been charged with murder.

Monmouth County prosecutors say Johnny Westbrook was driving the SUV that struck 63-year-old Daniel Rivera around 5 p.m. Friday in Asbury Park. Both men are from that city.

Rivera was walking near 3rd Avenue and Langford Street when he was struck. He was taken to a hospital but died there a short time later.

No other injuries were reported in the accident.

It wasn’t known Monday of Westbrook has retained an attorney.

Authorities declined further comment on the charges, citing the ongoing investigation.
