NEW CASTLE, Va. (AP) - Police say a woman was fatally shot outside an electrical cooperative in western Virginia and a man driving a car that fled the scene fatally shot himself after a high-speed pursuit in a neighboring county.
Virginia State Police said in statements that the Craig County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting report Wednesday at the Craig-Botetourt Rural Electric Cooperative and found 31-year-old Ashley Bayne dead on the sidewalk.
When Botetourt County Sheriff’s deputies tried to stop a Dodge Charger that left the shooting scene, the driver fled, reaching speeds of 110 mph (177 kph). Police say the car stopped and deputies found the driver, 52-year-old James Bayne, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He died at a hospital.
Police say the two had a domestic relationship but weren’t married or related.
