NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - A former Connecticut high school math teacher has been sentenced to spend nine months in jail for having sex with a 15-year-old male student.

The New Haven Register reports that 27-year-old Kirvanna Jones was sentenced Wednesday.

Jones initially was charged with second-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor. She pleaded guilty to risk of injury to a minor.

She was also placed on the state sex offender registry for 10 years and barred from teaching or mentoring anyone under age 16.

Authorities say Jones was a teacher at the Engineering and Science University Magnet Middle and High School in Hamden when she had sex with the student in December 2015.

School officials were alerted by a friend of the victim who saw provocative pictures Jones had texted him.
