ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York environmental conservation officers have charged several hunters with illegally killing deer over bait piles or using headlights.
The Department of Environmental Conservation says Wednesday that a man in the Herkimer County town of Ohio was charged in November after several people reported a buck suspected of being shot over bait had been entered in a big buck contest.
In Ontario County, an officer heard a gunshot while checking out a deer hanging in a Manchester garage. The officer found two bait piles behind the house and a dead 8-point buck with a mouthful of corn. The homeowner was ticketed for shooting the deer from his window and hunting over bait.
In Steuben County, three men were charged with illegally killing eight deer after dark using car headlights.
